Masters of the Air

We are now up to Episode 8 of the hit show Masters of the Air.  Airing on AppleTV, the show follows the squadrons of the Mighty Eighth, 8th Air Force, during their time over the skies of Europe in the lead-up to D-Day and the US Army Air Forces aerial bombardment campaign against Nazi Germany.

WOW!! What a fantastic show!  The production value is immense.  As a career Airman, it hits me right in the center of all the feels as we watch what the Greatest Generation endured up there.  The show does a wonderful job of portraying the experiences of America's Airmen during WWII.

But more than that, the production and writing team did a fantastic job at catching the nuanced details of being a young man fighting America's battles and the responsibilities that went with it.

From the Crew Chiefs to the Gunners to the Aircraft Commanders, and everyone in-between, everyone gets their moment.  (Even the Navs, but hey I guess they should since the original book's author is one. Haha!)  It highlights that Airpower is a collective effort, truly.  It takes a team of motivated individuals joining together to become a highly effective team.

The Airmen of all the various bomber, fighter, and transport groups across all of the theaters of WWII performed amazing feats of airmanship and dedication to God & Country.  If nothing else, this fantastic television program has motivated me to read more of the books written by and about them, and to learn more about our history as an Air Force and Nation.

Check it out if you have not already!

Hunting Warbirds

For the previous year and a half, we have been on an adventure of epic proportions.  Our parent company, Holling Enterprises (IG: @hollingenterprises), is involved in many different but related lines of business activities. The company operates a FAA Part 145 Repair Station, and for many years owned a pair of CF-5D Freedom Fighters.  These aircraft were eventually sold back in 2018, but the company's story didn't end there.  It was during this time that the original At The Merge website was published, starting in 2016. You can listen to our early podcast episodes (links at top of page) in order to get some backstory on what occurred with the original ATM efforts.

The company's founder and president, Marcus Holling (IG: @flywarbirds) has had a passion for warbirds going back as far as 2008, many years prior to his founding of the company. Jet warbirds, in particular, have been his and the company's particular focus over the years.  One of his company's specialties over the years has been the identification, acquisition, and return to airworthiness of long-abandoned former military jet aircraft.

Which brings us to the present day.  He has fully re-engaged the company in the jet warbird scene since the beginning of 2023. This occurred happily after taking a few years away from jet warbirds in order to focus on other business efforts and grow the company.

Hunting Warbirds is one of the results of this renewed focus on jet warbirds.  The At The Merge Youtube channel will begin publishing this new video series in June 2024.  You will be able to follow along with Marcus and his team as they have begun scouring the globe to find the absolute best aircraft, both for their clients and for his family of companies.  From turbo-props to jets, and even a helicopter or two, you are invited to join the team on this journey.  We promise it will be a fun watch.  We've been compiling lots of video content over the past 18 months and have much more to shoot.  Stay tuned!
